is on the decline simply because they haven't recruited as well. When they went to Omaha, they had Micah Owings a pitcher/DH that was an All-American, and good players like Micheal Aubrey, James Jurries and Mark Hamilton. Also, LSU hiring Paul Manieri hurt their recruting as well. Smoke Laval was passing over a LOT of good players in La., and they started going to other places like Tulane. Manieri is not going to let that happen again.

Heck, I think Tulane just built or was building a brand new or renovated baseball facility in the Garden District somewhere. Programs that are struggling don't do things like that.

Rick Jones is a very good baseball coach, but he has to learn how to adapt to what Manieri is doing if he's going to keep them moving forward.

And for what it's worth, I think Tulane needs a new football coach. They need someone like a Gus Mahlzahn to fire people up.

but D I-AA seems to be more appropriate. They could play in the Southland Conference against McNeese St., Stephen F. Austin, etc.

Man, dropping out of the SEC was a brilliant move.

Their endowment is for academic purposes. People could go to jail for diverting that money to athletics.

Pride, yes. Money, no. Compared to the amount of money rolling around on Tulane's campus very, very little goes to athletics. Tulane's president has considered dropping to D-III on at least one occasion. There is a constant stroking of Scott Cowen's (Tulane Pres.) ego to try and get more money for the athletic department. Example: At Tulane's homecoming auction fundraiser (the biggest money maker of the year for TU Athletics) The athletic committee went in with a university board to donate $40,000 for an auction item. The auction item: Author James Patterson would dedicate and name a character in his new book for......Scott Cowen.

More than $297 million of the campaign's total was earmarked specifically for Tulane's endowment to support chairs, professorships, scholarships, fellowships, research, scholarly travel, internships, athletics and libraries. Through the campaign, endowed chairs and professorships grew from 153 to 331.

As you can easily look up Tulane's endowment is over a billion and is one of the few Universities in the country with an endowment that large. I believe there might be around 70.

Tulane is not going to drop to D3, there is too much money and pride involved. It may stuggle but it will keep going, and it is absurd to suggest otherwise.

I'm not sure what their endowment is anymore but it's not (and never has been) one of the biggest in the country and whatever is there isn't used for athletics at all.

Tulane athletics has their own endowment from what I understand, but it like their athletic department as a whole, is insignificant.

drop to Division III since just in the last few years they were on the verge of dropping football altogether...that's a fact not an absurdity. History shows that "kosher" funding toward a nonprofit endeavor won't last too long. It may go toward some other part of the university that shows more "profit."

UNO was originally LSUNO when it was created, and wikipedia say it's still a member of the LSU system.

That is in no way true. Tulane is not going to drop to D3. That is an absurd statement. They have one of the biggest endowments in the country.

With or without the hurricane, UNO has been heading downhill for years. Many fans in the New Orleans area are LSU or Tulane fans and that does not leave much room for any other schools in the area. Plus, community around the area has been in rapid decline for 20 years and Katrina pretty much cleared out people in that area who would actually support the school.

Sad deal but division three competition would bring in teams what UNO could be more competitive with. \

It would be nice if UL (Louisiana Lafayette) would consolidate this school and make it one of their satellite campuses. The growth of UL could support something like this since UNO seems to be headed down the wrong path.
