I'll ask a hard question: was JJ considered an NFL bust?

I also think Reggie Bush is as much on the waiting list as Young or Leinart.

Howard was a Super Bowl MVP, albeit as a special teams player. He may not be a HOFer, but hardly a bust. The others are right on the money, esp. Klingler & Emtman Detmer was one of those guys who was so overhyped in college, his legitimate achievements notwithstanding, that his pro "career" was miserably pathetic in comparison. Calling him a draft bust may be incorrect, but I still think of him as a bust in the same way I do Danny Wuerffel - outrageous college hype (including undeserved Heismans IMO) followed by a ridiculously unmemorable stint in the pros.

I think Brady Quinn is well on his way to joining the list - though he was a late 1st Rounder (I think). I just remember how all the ESPN coverage on Draft Day was "Poor Brady... still waiting..."

And doesn't Ditka's "Ricky Williams trade for the rest of the draft" have to rate up there somewhere? I mean, he's been fairly solid at times (mostly for the Dolphins), but the Saints had NO draft picks after him! And he didn't last but a couple of seasons in NO and was weird as hell the whole time...

can you put Ty Detmer on that list? He was drafted in a round that doesn't exist anymore, the 9th. In other words, he would have been undrafted today. And he played 13 years as a backup. Detmer as a draft bust is just not correct, especially when you look at some of the first rounders that year.

There's 6 busts in the first 9 picks, I bet they didn't play 13 years combined.

didn't know until i just looked it up that when he was QB coach at WTAMU that they also listed him as men's golf coach

In that draft, the first 5 picks were Troy Aikman, Tony Mandarich, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, and Deion Sanders. Everyone (other than Mandarich) is potentially a Hall of Famer.

Marinovich is missing? How quickly we forget! I'd put Ty Detmer and Curtis Enis in there as well, and hold a future position for Sam Bradford.

Akili Smith was a good call, whoever said that one.

Leaf, though, is definitely number one, just for the fact that he was once considered Peyton's equal. As Peyton continues to break records and Canton starts constructing a separate wing for him, Leaf's flop becomes even more horrible in stark comparison.

If we're talking about 1st round picks that didn't work out (rather than 1st pick busts), you have to talk about the Saints' 1st round (11th overall) pick of P/K Russell Erxleben out of University of Texas in 1979. I wish I could clear much of my Saints' memories out of my head.

ripping Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys for taking Troy Aikman over Mandarich. "You don't rebuild a franchise with a QB, you build it on the line and they just passed up the best player in this draft." Another shining Kiper moment. And Green Bay stayed down a couple of more years after picking Mandarich next.
