Who has/had more fan support: Croom in 08 or Jackie in 03 |

I think Jackie had more because of the somewhat sustained success we had in the late 90`s. I just don`t feel much love within our ranks for Croom right now.
Edited to add : Jackie should have obviously been fired after 02.

jackie won many bowls and proved MSU could win and compete. Plus he made moves to try to right the ship and had a legit excuse for the downfall (two year NCAA
witch hunt). Croom has shown that one good defensive coach can carry your lard ass right into a raise and contract extension, refuses to blame anything he or
his buddies does on any loss, and has lashed out at the fans already. Jackie won except for the freefall years.. Croom loses and blames everyone within
eyesight for it.

The problem with JWS, once he started losing...People, me included, wer'e not going to also put up with the continuous needless PF penalties, and the bull
shit demonstrations and strutting by the players.
That was hard to take while we were winning. |

Croom is almost the anti-Jackie... | #4
|
For most of his time here, State people loved Jackie and Jackie always related well and went out of his way to connect with the MSU fanbase while opposing teams and the media hated him. On the other hand, Croom always seems to stay at odds with our fans and seems to treat us like the enemy while the media, especially national media, and other teams' coaches and fan adore him. |

I'd say Jackie, at least for me personally. I wasn't happy.......... | #5

.......in '03 by any means, and I was torn between changing coaches and giving him more time. One day I was for change, the next I wasn't. The thing about Jackie was that he had built up some credibility with his previous success. Croom hasn't built anything in five years except to have one fluke season. There's more than just record going against Croom though. Croom doesn't impress me at all as a head coach. What I mean by that is he doesn't
handle himself like a head coach. For one, he doesn't know how to handle the fans or the media(always having to clarify something). Another, more important
thing is his glaring weakness on game day. He looks completely lost sometimes, clueless even. We see very little in the way of in-game adjustments from Croom,
and his mind-boggling decisions at times such as punting from our opponent's 30-yard-line just take the cake. Jackie Sherrill may not have been immune to
doing some questionable things at times, but never did I think for a second that we didn't have a real, bonafide Div. 1-A head coach roaming the sideline.
He looked the part, he acted the part, and more importantly he coached it. At the end I believe he just lost his desire for the game because of everything
going on from an NCAA investigation to his wife becoming ill.

once like in the United States where men were free." - Ronald Reagan

No 17ing way. I don't ever recall Jackie ever calling out the fans. I also don't recall Jackie throwing players under the bus every loss the way crxxms
does. I also seem to remember Jackie putting the players on display to the fans for "meet the players" days. crxxms said something about it not
happening until the players earn it or some stupid shit. I also recall Jackie ringing cowbells for and with the fans. I also recall Jackie personally calling
some boosters weekly and giving them the whats going on this week updates. crxxms may do it, just not with anyone I know. crxxmsux.

Nearly every state fan I run into starts a conversation with me essentially the same way: "You think we're gonna get rid of him?" I'm
talking about uber sheep as well.
We all know Swindoll is a f'n idiot loser, but his "majority of fans support Coach Croom" bullshit is just a lie from hell. |

"had a legit excuse for the downfall (two year NCAA witch hunt)"
It's amazing to me that people will totally excuse Jackie's last 3 years and then turn around and complain about Croom non-stop. People blame the NCAA investigation, but they fail to mention that Jackie signed two of his highest rated classes during this period. How exactly did the NCAA investigation kill us? I'll tell you what caused our downfall (in no particular order). We signed a class full of JUCO busts in 2001. We had no discipline whatsoever. Jackie lost the fire. Players like Dontae Walker were allowed to start in his senior year over players like Jerious Norwood. We quit when things got tough. Our defense was horrible. Etc, etc, etc. If there had been no NCAA investigation we still would have fallen off the edge of the world. Jackie should have resigned after 2002, but instead he came back and buried the program. I don't blame him for where we currently are, but we started out the Croom era in a hole because of him. Croom simply hasn't pulled us out of that hole, but he didn't create it. Both coaches have done bad jobs this decade and, just like Jackie, Croom will hang on too long. |

As much as we sucked in 2001-2003, at least Jackie had actually won a lot of games here in his career. Also, Jackie never acted like he was more important than the fans and he didn't throw his players under the bus when we lost. As pissed as I'll always be at Jackie for what he did to our program this century, I'll always appreciate what he did for it in the 1990s. |

The 2003 season didn't get truly sucky until after he announced his retirement before the Auburn Game. As I recall the Oregon and Houston games would have
been winnable had our defense not slept the first quarter.

I'd give Jackie the edge | #16

I remember when he first got here in 1991. It was utterly amazing to see Mississippi State beating Texas, Auburn, and making Ole Miss squeal like the little
bitches they truly are. After five years of Rockey Felker (sorta like Croom, but without the gameday smarts), it was refreshing to see a real Head Coach on the
sidelines.
I'll always appreciate Coach Sherrill for making MState competitive in the SEC, for bringing parity back to the Alabama rivalry, for putting teams on the field that would just PUMMEL the opponent and make them scared to ever come back to Scott Field, and for the anger opposing fans would have when they'd say something stupid like, "Ah've always luvved Meeesaseeepy State, but ah haate that thar crook Jackie Sherrill. You's be's better off gittin' rid of heem". That said, he should've left after 2001. He just didn't have it anymore. Not only that, but the long, drawn-out investigation (where we found the biggest violation was that a coach said, "good game" to a high school player after a game) that was only in place because the Southeastern Conference got tired of Miss. State competing for an SEC West championship every year, ensured that he wouldn't get the recruits he needed to bring the program back (we got a lot of talent, but it was a bunch of thugs). I really wanted Croom to succeed. I was hoping the reason he never got a shot at a Head Coaching job was because he was black and other schools were scared of that. I was hoping that we turned the corner last year when Wes Carroll turned out to be a very good QB, and Croom's recruits were finally in place. However, this season simply showed that last year was a fluke. If Croom stays in 2009, it'll make Sherrill's 2003 team look like his 1999 team. Coach Croom is a powerful speaker. He can get a room of middle-aged, fat white guys all fired up and willing to run through a wall for him. Problem is, he doesn't have any middle-aged bald white guys on the roster. |

"As I recall the Oregon and Houston games would have been winnable had our defense not slept the first quarter."
What people forget is both Oregon and Houston took the foot off the gas once they were up big. It's not simply a case where our defense played bad for the first quarter, our defense was terrible all the way around, particularly the secondary. Other teams just coasted once they got up 28-0 out of the gates. |
