thelaw
08-03-2010, 02:24 AM
someone has some sense. Allman Brothers are one of the best bands in history and influenced countless artists.

Also the Bill Evans trio with Scott Lafaro and Paul Motian were arguably the best jazz trio in history, an all of them were American. Damn, I love the Black Crowes, but come on, the best ever?

And 80's hair bands are not and cannot be the best bands in history. Damn.

And just as a side note to Shmuley, I honestly like Joe Walsh's stuff better than the Eagles, but thats just me.

AzzurriDawg4

Elvis and Chuck Berry aren't really "bands" though, I think that is the distinction. They are without a doubt rock and roll though.

AzzurriDawg4

They are all HUGE, but I don't think they qualify as bands.

But one thing we all should agree on... Metallica sucks.

tommyboy1520
08-03-2010, 02:34 AM
It's either GnR or Metallica with my pick being GnR. Van Halen could get an honorable mention, but the rest of the bands thrown out aren't touching the first two. Bottom line, GnR could have been a top 5 worldwide, all-time had they stuck together and kept making music with only the Beatles and Stones firmly edging them out.

ETA-Black Crowes would get an honorable mention from me as well.

OMlawdog
08-03-2010, 02:34 AM
I've seen him three times and each time I think, "the guy can write, but the guy can't put on a show"

Comparing Dylan to someone like Neil Young and the shows they put on is simply unfair.

Now maybe Dylan would be better in a small less than 150 people type setting, but I just found him to be terribly overrated. There I said it.

AzzurriDawg4
08-03-2010, 02:35 AM
I am mortified to see how many votes the Eagles and Skynard are going to get.

Of course, we are talking about one of the most subjective topics in the world, but my American favorites are:

The Dead, The Band, CSNY, GNR, Allman Brothers, The Doors

Requiem For A Dawg
08-03-2010, 02:35 AM
Bon Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, ZZ Top, The Eagles, and Phish. Not greatest of all time but currently: Kings Of Leon, MGMT, and Vampire Weekend

Allman Brothers
Eagles

ZZ Top
KISS
Pearl Jam
Grateful Dead

I think that as far as American rock bands are concerned Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is the unquestioned number 1. You could also put names like Bob Dylan or Neil Young up here, but if we're just talking bands, then I guess not.<div>
</div><div>Followed in no particular order by: AC/DC (Kick ass rock and roll), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Talking Heads (underrated), The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds is one of the best records of all time), The Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd (see AC/DC, except more southern), Big Star (HUGELY underrated), Fugazi (true punk, not this Green Day bullshit), Nirvana, Pavement (revolutionizedindependent music), Pearl Jam, R.E.M., and The Velvet Underground. I'm sure I'm leaving some of, but those are off the top of my head.</div><div>
</div><div>Great newer bands are: Wilco, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Kings of Leon were good until this new shitty album, Spoon, The National, My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse, The Hold Steady was up here until Franz left, Drive-By Truckers, and The Black Keys.</div><div>
</div><div>Bands I think are overrated and shitty, but everyone else seems to like: Aerosmith, Van Halen (only admirable quality is the comedy that comes with listening to them), basically any hair metal band, Bon Jovi, The Eagles, Elvis (did he ever even write any of his own songs), ZZ Top, and last but certainly not least Guns n Roses. Guns n Roses might be one of the worst bands of all time. Appetite for Destruction was horrible, Use Your Illusion was hideous, Use Your Illusion II was god awful, Chinese Democracy was brilliant (sarcasm); not to mention that Axel Rose is one of the stupidest persons to ever walk on this planet. I mean come on guys... really? Guns n Roses?</div><div>
</div><div>I know I've left some off, but this is all I can think of right now. </div>

I did not mean they were the greatest of all time. I meant that currently as in right now, they are pretty much the only active rock band I will listen to. And they are not pop by any means. The two songs of theirs that were played on the radio are far from the rest of the music they make. They just recently became popular in America because of those two songs. They have been huge in Europe and specifically the UK for close to 10 years.

but dude, to say that a band that puts out a cd with 12 three minute, cookie cutter songs is the best "active" american band is ludicrous.

To name a few that are better than KOL:

The Black Crowes (as mentioned earlier)
North Mississippi Allstars
Tea Leaf Green
Umphrey's McGee
The Black Keys
My Morning Jacket

All of those bands are more original and play better music than KOL.

Their first five albums were amazing. For Whom the Bell Tolls is one of my favorites- when Lars makes the bass drums sound like horses running- that's freaking awesome. Like many, the first time I saw Metallica was on MTV when they came out with One, and it absolutely blew me away how fast they were playing.

I really like REM a lot to. Some of their stuff sucks though- like Everybody Hurts and Happy Shiny People. But "It's the End of the World and I feel fine" is awesome.

Nirvana, Van Halen, Aerosmith, the Eagles- all great to.

FlabLoser

Yeah, free copyrighted music via napster was wrong. But Metallica fought legitimate digital distribution channels kicking, screaming, and whining. They even spoke out in front of Congress against it. If it were up to Metallica, mp3s, iPods, etc. would not exist.

I'm a little surpised no on has mentioned the Pixies. Not only are they great, but they are possibly the most influential band over the last 25 years.

Don Caballero (instrumental, I'd be surprised if anyone else on the board has ever heard of them)

I grew up listening to my dad playing his CCR Chronicles record on the record player. Everytime I here a song of theirs on the radio or in a movie it takes me back to being 5-6 year old. BTW, I dont know if any of you have heard them recently, actually Credence Clearwater Revistited now that Fogerty split with them years ago, you wouldnt know he wasnt still there. I saw them in Tunica a couple years ago and they had this guy that looked like a Mechanic doing lead and a blind man couldnt have told it wasnt Fogerty.
