Hoosiers is more of a "sports movie" whereas Caddyshack was basically a platform for comedians to display their talents while incorporating a sport. The Caddyshack script was originally much more golf oriented, but once the cameras started rolling, it became a showcase for comedic legends and the script was practically abandoned.Hell, I'm not complaining.<div>
</div><div>I guess it just depends on what kind of mood you're in. While I'd probably choose Caddyshack over Hoosiers nine times out of ten, it's just because I like comedies more. Hoosiers is the better sports movie, because it's about sports.</div><div>
</div><div>ETA: The Sandlot gets a close 2nd behind Hoosiers for me. And as far as chick flicks disguised as sports movies, For Love of the Game gets my vote. Kevin Costner is the sports movie king.</div>

Bull Durham, for the Minor League Baseball parts, was pretty dead on. It had many things that reminded me of my time in the Minors. The only thing that doesn't seal it is that Tim Robbins was not believable as a gifted pitcher. Not many 95 mph fastball have arcs on them.

You have to ask if the bowling makes it a sports movie. And that's assuming you consider bowling a sport.

Hanmudog
08-06-2010, 01:42 AM
I know the critics didn't care for it but I also loved Rocky 4 with the big Russian. It is the only movie that I have ever seen people stand up at like they were actually at a sporting event.

Requiem For A Dawg

One of my favorites. Does it count as a sports movie? Not being an A-hole just asking.

The animal in me votes for Caddyshack...but this was a very well done movie about baseball that not a lot of people have seen. I think it was Robert DeNiro's film debut. The film was a starring vehicle for Michaal Moriarity but DeNiro stole the spotlight as a slow wittedcatcher playing out his final year as he dies from a terminal disease.

They're just on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Caddyshack is a comedy and Hoosiers is a drama, but it doesn't make on more (or less) of a sports movie than the other. That's why they are 1A and 1B as far as I'm concerned.

jakldawg
08-06-2010, 02:13 AM
and He Got Game. One could argue that the golf aspect of Caddyshack is secondary (at best) to the general theme of the movie, so if it counts as a sports movie, you might as well count Lebowski as a sports movie.
Also: saw Big Fan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228953/) the other night. Patton Oswalt plays an obsessive sports-talk radio loving fan (spoiler alert) who gets beaten up by his favorite player. It's worth a look, but is more a movie about fandom than sports (which is good, given the subject matter since, for whatever reason, most football movies suuuuuuuuuck).

while in high school, we were about to get our asses beat, yet aGAIN, andCoach Bosherswas giving his pre-game speech. Hewas saying something like "we're gonna go out there and give it our all and let no one hold us down. Sure, they're bigger and faster than us, but weplay with abigger heart!"Then, some freshman chimed in a said "kinda like Rudy huh coach?"and coach doesn't miss a beat and says "17 no!! Rudy sucked at football!" Needless to say, we were all laughing our asses off and were in a good mood all game long, while getting beat by 6 or 7 TD's.

At least not "serious" sports movies like Rudy or Remember the Titans or the Natural, etc... To me, they are awful, awful movies that are cliched and formulaic. The only exception for me would be Victory. It's a "serious" sports movie that is pretty good.

Now, if it's a comedy that just happens to features sports, like Happy Gilmore or Slapshot, I'm in.

1. Hoosiers
2. Rudy
3. The Natural
4. Kevin Costner's sports movies/Sandlot

I will argue to the grave on this subject and how my rankings are right and should be recognized by all sports movie watchers. Caddyshack is 17'n awesome but it isn't a sports movie.

Vision Quest is awesome as well, but doesn't make the top 10 because no one has heard of it.

Remember the Titans is a good one too, just too much about racial stuff in it for me. That and Hayden Panettiere is the most annoying thing ever in that movie.

I tend to think of myself like Jimmy Chitwood (just raining jumpers all day), but I have dribbled a few off my Chucks ala Ollie. Gave up the granny freethrow YEARS ago.

Rocky was inspired by Chuck Wepner's( a nobody fighter)fight with Ali. Wepner steped on Ali's foot, and delivered a punch, Ali went down. Wepner was knocked out in the 15th round.
He did not have 5 or 6 sequals.
