W's - Memphis, Samford, Vandy, ULM

Toss-ups - USC, Arkansas, and State. I don't see them beating USC. Arkansas will play like a rivalry game so I give the edge to Arkansas @ home. And I won't pick aGAINST State in the Egg Bowl in the preseason.

I would have picked us better than 3 wins..... Honestly, I think 6 wins and a bowl game is quite plausible. I could see us winning as few as 4 and as many as 8, but either would be worst/best case scenario. We actually have some talent this year with all of the pices of the puzzle (if we can line them up). Who knows what will actually happen, though.

This is a team with a lot of first string talent, but little depth. They will have to show some character down the stretch, develop some depth, and that isn't easy.

I don't expect you to have any. As I said, that would be best case scenario. I don't think we will win eight games. I think we CAN (meaning if everythign goes right....just like it did for a previously 3-win MSU team last year), we can win. Hell, who knows, we may go 0-12, but I think 6-6 is quite reasonable.

6-6. We should beat Memphis, Vandy, ULM and Samford all at home. I have to think(hope) Nutt can find 2 wins out of Ark, MSU, SC, Bama, Wake, and Auburn with 3 of them being at home.

Did you miss App. State beating Michigan last year too? Or 4-8 Stanford beating the Rose Bowl champs? I&#39;m sure you knew that would actually happen.

Remember, that eight win State team was only three points better (at home) than the worst Ole Miss team in school history coached by the worst HC in SEC history.</p>

Both teams had good recruiters as Head Coaches the year before. Both teams lost close games the year before. Both teams have/had new coaches with shady pasts who fled to Mississippi. I see 8-4, 4-4.

True, the Rebel fan base tends to get chubs over recruiting rankings instead of actual on-field performance, but they do return good offensive and defensive lines, have a good running game, some decent linebackers, and a serviceable QB. Coach Nutt can get a lot out of little talent, and while this team isn&#39;t as talented as his Arkansas teams, a favorable schedule helps them out a lot.

Awesome, man. You are right. I hadn't gotten over the egg bowl loss, but now that you put it that way..... it has sunk in, and I think I can move on. Thanks.

Also, you are so certain of your opinions, I think no one else should voice one. Don't start talking alot of shit about how we don't go to bowl games since you just went to your first in about 5-6 years. I know we sucked last year, but I believe we will suck less this year. Your team had a good season. Congratulations. Now lets see if you can build off of it. As for Mississippi, I think we go 6-6......which was the question asked in this thread.

team A went 8-5 last year, Team B went 3-9 last year. Team A returns a lot of starters. Team B's home venue is not exactly Tiger Stadium. And you don't understand why Team A would be a preseason favorite to win that game? Well, that about sums up your sports knowledge.

I tell you the logic I don't follow, how a 3-9 (0-8) team's fans think a 4-5 game improvement is likely. That's what I'm not getting.

If your definition of sucking less this year is doubling your win total from last year, your sir are quite the optimist. I just hope you can handle the disappointment when it doesn&#39;t happen this year.

I do think Nutt gets yall back to 6 - 8 wins a year at some point. It just won&#39;t be his first season.

I notice you left out the "Team B" returning starters. And no mention of "Team A" winning all of their games with a decent defense, only to lose their Defensive Coordinator and replace him with a coach that has spent the majority of his career as an offensive assistant coach.

And didn't State make a big turnaround last year?

Also, Oxford may not be Tiger Stadium, but State hasn't won there in a decade.

All I'm saying is that MSU was 4-3-1 against Arkansas before Nutt and 1-9 against Nutt. I think Nutt may have had something to do with that. He's in Oxford now, so why do most MSU fans believe this game is an easy win?

RebelBruiser

I'll tell you at least where my optimism comes from. For me, it's because we found out after the fact that our previous coach was treating practices more like the Junction Boys than anything else. That would explain a lot of the reason why we would play well for 3 quarters and then not be able to hold on for the 4th.

I really don't think our issues last year had that much to do with lack of talent. We had QB issues, and we had some experience issues, but overall, we were able to still overcome most of that and be competitive. We just couldn't finish off games because our coaching staff apparently thought it'd be a good idea to push the team non-stop, which caused them to play most of the season on dead legs.

I feel like we'll be better at the QB position, more experienced at every other position (with the exception or RB), and I feel like the attitude adjustment/conditioning adjustment will be enough for us to get over the hump in a lot of those games this year.

I really don't see anyone being unreasonable here either. The best conference record I see an Ole Miss fan predicting is 4-4. That would make for a decent season. You may not want to believe it, but we have the talent on our team to be at least mediocre. I don't think that's a huge stretch.

The flaws in your posts are outstanding. Let&#39;s start with Harbison coaching offensive players most of his career. That&#39;s totally false. He coached wide receivers for 4 years at Alabama, 2003-2006. From 1994 to 200-3, he coached defensive backs. </p>

State&#39;s turnaround wasn&#39;t a one year deal. The Ole Miss turnaround won&#39;t be either.</p>

Congrats to Nutt, he won 6 of those games aGAINST 6 of the worst teams in SEC history. Aren&#39;t you trying to use a similar logic to discredit Croom?

And lastly, where are you seeing all this easy win talk? It&#39;s not in this thread.</p>

I think they will get back quicker than we did, I think we were in alot worse shape than they were at the deepest point of the valley.

BUT.....all this talk about returning players, a strong defensive line, young talented unproven running backs.....eerily similar to the wool many on this board, especially myself, had in preseason 2006.

We won 3. Add a decent QB to that mix and I think they can go 5-7 and with some breaks 6-6. Not much better than that. I don't predict a bowl game for them at all. They will, however, probably beat us, because that's how State rolls.

olemiss21
08-04-2008, 02:10 AM
HD you are right on one thing. I haven't seen too much optimism here about the Egg Bowl. I guess I've been infected with the total nonsense over on Genespage. I just can't bring myself to post there though.

I do see State's turnaround as a one year thing. I mean MSU went:

3-8 in 2004
3-8 in 2005
3-9 in 2006
8-5 in 2007

That's a pretty big jump in one year. Granted you didn't change coaches that year, but most teams don't make a five game jump in the victory column in one year, at least not in the SEC.

And you started with a coach who had never been a head coach at any level. Nutt doesn't fit that description. Now I'm not saying that Nutt is the "end all be all" of college coaches, but he certainly is someone that MSU has had difficulties with. Sure he beat up on bad MSU teams, but Ole Miss lost to a few of those MSU teams.

Sorry for the intrusion, I guess I should stop reading genespage.

I like to think of Croom like Schiano. Maybe O was doing the same thing? In '05 and '06 the team was terrible, '07 you seemed to get the bad bounces, maybe this year O would have gotten some of those bounces?

Or, like many Ole Miss fans think, he was just inflicting more and more damage while recruiting thugs a la Sherrill '02.

We'll find out soon enough, and I'm curious.

The thing that doesn't add up is how Ole Miss fans, the same ones I mentioned above, expect a big turnaround after O completely massacred the team. If O really was building a good foundation, Nutt may win this year. If he wasn't, he won't.

Shit, Nick Saban could even take a 6-6 Bammer team and win 8 games. Why should Ole Miss?

olemiss21
08-04-2008, 02:28 AM
Well frankly I don't expect 8 wins, I think 7 would be the limit, and that's assuming some team overlooks us.

I kinda doubt Orgeron would have gotten any good bounces this year. He's just not what I'd call a lucky guy. I'm just glad I can watch an interview with the Ole Miss head coach and not cringe.

RebelBruiser
08-04-2008, 02:31 AM
Well, and another reason many of us are thinking positively about this season is that we've received a decent amount of positive attention in the pre-season. We're not being picked higher than 4th in the division by anyone, but many bowl projections include us, and we've received a lot of hype as a potential surprise team.

In past years, for both of us, most times the optimism from our fanbases hasn't been echoed by any outside sources. It's been solely positive thinking within the fanbase. For us though, it's not just Ole Miss fans saying we have a shot to have a decent team this year. If it was just Ole Miss fans, then it would be different.

This is a team that almost won 8 games last year, missing out due to the fact that they employed the worst HC in SEC history. Now that one of the nation's most respected traditional college football powers has a coach to match it is east to see that no mere SEC team can compete with them. These last 3 years have been a aberration MooU fans. It is painfully obvious that you aren't in the same class as the mighty Rebs. And...he was a true freshman. You can't judge a QB too much by what he does as a true freshman, because most true freshman QBs don't put up great numbers.

You should know this with your QB you had last year. Snead may be great. He could be average, or he could end up being a bust. Either way, I wouldn't use his freshman year as much of an indicator.

I say 5 or 6 wins, even though I do think that this OM team is a good bit more talented than the State team that won 8 games last year. It's all about chemistry, momentum, and luck. Everything bounced State's way in the close games last year, and all of the losses were fairly decisive.
There may be 3 potential 1st round picks on the Rebel Dline alone, and those guys are finally upperclassmen now. Throw in Trahan, Sanford, and Walker, and you've got yourselves a defense. The Oline is also very seasoned and has two NFLers, so the offense will all come down to Snead. And judging from the spring game on tv, Snead might be an upper tier SEC QB, talent wise.
I'll say wins over Memphis, Samford, Vandy, Arkansas, ULM, and MSU.

We went through two qbs last year to get to Carroll, and I believe Snead opts to run the ball more, even worse odds when you play ball in the SEC. We all remember the 'cut above' and 'duece for heisman' stickers, and how many folks put those stupid "O" the coach stickers on their cars? Comparing Carroll&#39;s throws without a pick string to McCoy&#39;s TD record and 160+ passer rating is stretching it at best. McCoy was one of the best QBs in the country the year he beat out Snead.

That said, McCoy&#39;s season has nothing to do with Snead&#39;s ability. He could still suck this year, but still, getting beat out by McCoy isn&#39;t something to be ashamed of.

Vegas has also set the O/U on wins this season at 6.5 for MSU and 5.5 for OM. Are you ready to admit that MSu will win more games than OM will?

</p>

</p>

You have an easier schedule, so if both teams are equal, you should win a game more. We both have 3 weak OOC teams. We play at Wake Forest. You play at Georgia Tech. Wake is picked higher in the ACC.

From the East, you play Vandy, Kentucky, and Tennessee. We play Florida, South Carolina, and Vandy. They obviously consider schedule strength when they set over/unders on win total, and you obviously have the more favorable schedule this year, which would explain the difference in our over/under totals.

that if you are good enough to start at Texas you better damn well be an elite quarterback. Your boy Sneed wasn&#39;t so he jumped ship to a C- program where he knew he could start no matter what.

Keep falling in love with this guy and I promise you will regret it later.

No great player leaves a top tear program because they don&#39;t have what it takes and becomes a program savior in the SEC. I wouldn&#39;t put all of my chips in on a Texas reject. Now I&#39;m not saying that if he came to State we wouldn&#39;t be doing the same thing, but with yall&#39;s history with over hyped Quarterbacks I just have to see it to believe it. Sorry that&#39;s just how I see it. Prove me wrong, and I will be the first person to be accountable for my comments here.</p>

I think MSU should win more games. MSU is coming off of an 8 win season and has some confidence. MSU plays GT, we play Wake. Advantage MSU. MSU plays UT, Vandy, and UK, we play UGA, Vandy, and SC. Advantage MSU. So yes I totally understand why Vegas is expecting MSU to win more games and I also understand why Vegas has us as a favorite over MSU as a futures bet.

if we had fired Croom after 2006, and hired Houston Nutt in 2007, would you have picked us to win 8 games? Have a winning season? Hell, even if we got Sneed to play last year for us, am I still to believe there would be a Rebel consensus that we'd be the surprise team in the West?

First, I only said he was pretty good, not all conference! He was a highly touted freshman backup to McCoy. While he didn't win the starting job, he came in against K-State off the bench (when McCoy got hurt) and played pretty well in a 45-42 loss where he was basically running for his life. (I think he got sacked 4-5 times in that one.) I went to UT, and I follow them pretty closely. There were quite a few UT fans that thought Mack Brown made the wrong decision to go with McCoy over Snead, but that is history.

</p>Great question and it&#39;s only gotten one bullshit answer. No way would these same Rebel fans believe that. I get so sick of hearing how good they&#39;re going to be every year. It&#39;s either unbelievable optimism or blind stupidity. For the record, I think they will go 5-7 (2-6) with wins over Memphis, Samford, Vandy, Arkansas, and ULM. I think the Memphis and Arkanasas games could go either way and the SC and State games could go either way.

Also, I think that Ole Miss will be a bowl team again in the near future. That won&#39;t stop Ole Miss fans from taking it a step up. Now, it&#39;s that they might be a 7/8 win team, and when they become a 7/8 win team, then holy shit, watch out because they&#39;ll be the next Ohio State/LSU/Georgia.

I'm glad someone knows how to read. And I wasn't necessarily bitching about 7 games anyway, just the general year after year sentiment and expectations of Ole Miss fans. It borders on lunacy for some people. I don't know if there's another fanbase in the country that so highly praises their team even though they've only won 14 games in 4 years. Ole Miss and Bama are always battling it out for most obnoxious fans that genuinely think their team will be much better than will actually happen.

Seriously.....3-9 (0-8) last year with a 2 point win over Memphis and a 7 point win over Northwestern State.

that Ole Miss will be favored in the egg bowl this year.

Im not saying we will win, Im not saying it will be by more than 1 point, but Im willing to bet 20 dollars that Ole Miss will be favored prior to kickoff.

If it is even, then its a push. What say you, 20 bucks loser pays sixpack or nafoom respectively.

Same reason I thought MSU would be favored last year, and the fact that we were favored the year before.

Same reason MSU is only a 10 point favorite against LA Tech.

Yea, and Wake is preseason Top 25 this year (No. 23 to be exact). They had a really good season 2 years ago and a good one again last year. Wake is supposed to be better than Georgia Tech this year. They&#39;re supposed to be one of the front runners to possibly win the ACC, so yes our OOC schedule, on paper, is tougher than yours this year. We&#39;ll likely go 3-1 in our OOC games.

Also, if we do go 6-6, we will be in a bowl game. There are 9 SEC tie-ins and room for 10 SEC teams if an SEC team gets an at large BCS big (which is likely, since there are 4 at large BCS spots). So unless 11 SEC teams are bowl eligible, every SEC team that gets to 6 wins will be in a bowl game somewhere. Last year, the SEC had 10 bowl eligible teams. That was the only time it has ever happened. Never have 11 teams in the SEC been bowl eligible in the same season.
