Virginia's version of Cerantola to start against dogs....

The cavs are rolling the dice with Griff McGarry. 0-5, 10 starts but just 35.2 innings pitched. 6.06 ERA highest on the team by far. 129 batters faced, 61 Ks, 40 walks, 24 earned runs. Apparently he is a feast or famine type guy. If he can throw it over the plate you are in trouble but if he can't it's quick hook, next man up. Hoping the big stage will be too much for him. We gotta be patient and make him prove he can consistently throw strikes. Cannot go up there hacking at the first pitch.

Read McGarry’s last start in the super regional lowered his ERA from 7.53 to 6.06. He has first round stuff when he’s locked in.

Hopefully MacLeod won’t be a headcase tonight.

MacLeod needs to have the same umpire that Bednar had Sunday night. When he's getting the high strike and calls on the edge of the plate, he's at his best.

When he’s locked in… Which has been one time in 10 starts. Maybe he found something last week or maybe it was a flash in the pan outlier performance.

Either way, McGarry is going to have to throw both his fastball and off speed pitches for strikes to beat us. We typically don’t swing and miss much and shouldn’t be intimidated by pure velocity- we see it all the time. Need to battle at the plate and not swing at bad pitches.

    2019- 57 BB/HBP in 53.1 innings
    2020- 21 BB/HBP in 20 innings
    2021- 44 BB/HBP in 35.2 innings

99 career innings, 122 free passes. Over 11 free passes per 9 innings this season. Hopefully we get the typical McGarry and lightning doesn’t strike twice.

Let’s hope he is less like Girado and more like Cerantola

While he may repeat it against us, it was definitely an outlier.

That was only the second start this season (out of 10) in which he made it past the 4th inning.

As someone else said, his ERA before his last start was 7.53. But his WHIP also dropped from 2.23 to 1.93 in his last start... so basically he allows two baserunners per inning. He also has 8 WP and 4 HBP on the year.

So this is a rare chance the starter can be the RAT?

Has that ever happened in the history post RAT formulation?

Plus, while that was in a Super, it was in an empty South Carolina stadium.

Pressure will be a little different tonight in front of 24k.

I think the biggest thing is we cannot help him out. We MUST NOT swing at pitches out of the strike zone.

Looking at their schedule he started out as their #2 for 5 weeks then jumped to the #1 slot for 2 weeks. He tended to last about 3 innings. He then dropped off the radar for about 6 weeks with just two relief appearances of 1 inning each and a mid-week start against VCU where he gave up 3 runs on 0 hits with 3 BB and did not record an out. Didn't see him again until the regional where he lasted 3.1 innings and gave up 3 runs. Then his last appearance vs DBU was his longest and best by far 7 innings 2 hits 0 runs.

Sounds very very similar to Cerantola except for his return to the rotation very late in the season.

Our fans there need to get on him early and try to rattle his cage a bit.

The chance to be the ultimate RAT. Think about it for a minute. How many times do you think a pitcher with an ERA north of 6 has started game 2 in the winners bracket in Omaha? I'd think you could count em on one hand.

He will probably either be the ultimate RAT or get shelled like a 5 gallon bucket of purple hull peas at your grandparent's house.

He’s very capable of shutting us down. No doubt about it. Should be interesting to see how his hand holds up. He’s had separate blisters in each of his last two starts, but it didn’t seem to phase him too much against DBU.

Either way we need to pitch it today. UVA’s staff behind McGarry is really good. Runs should be tough to come by.

We win with by crooked numbers because I'm back home where I can do my juju. I'm not going back in again if the opposite happens so don't ask. Nine days is long enough. I'm ready to raise hell.

I’m more worried about us shutting ourselves down, honestly. In the 2018 CWS against UNC, we had an inning extended by errors where we ended up scoring a bunch of runs to put the game out of reach. In 2019 against Auburn, they choked away the game to us in a similar type inning. In the other 54 innings in Omaha, we’ve had a handful of rinky dink 1 run innings, and been completely awful for the rest of the time. 3 different teams and 3 different years (including this year thus far) we have sucked ass at hitting in TD Ameritrade. The approach has to change in many ways on our end before we can even really worry about who the other team is pitching.

Plate discipline is the word(s) of the day. Rowdey needs to set the tone and watch a couple. Make this headcase throw it over the plate.
