What’s a highlight that most people forget because we lost the game.

I’ve been watching a lot of old MSU football highlights on YouTube and it got me to wondering what great plays do people forget because we ended up losing the game later?

First thing that came to mind, but I doubt this is a forgotten highlight.

2009 Jonathan Banks pick 6 vs Tebow. Maybe the loudest I’ve ever heard DWS

2014 Orange Bowl Hail Mary right before halftime.

2010 NIT vs. North Carolina, Varnado one handed alley oop.

2009 football vs. Houston, Dixon’s crazy touchdown run where he broke a bunch of tackles and dragged a guy the last 20 yards.

KP punt return for TD has to be #1
Led late in the 4th Qrt after that TD.
    Didn’t last long unfortunately.
Arkansas game where we drove it down the field late, diving into the EZ and fumbled it thru the EZ and we lose the game.
Forgot who the RB was and year.

Arkansas game was Vick Ballard in 2010. I think it was in OT.

That whole game was one of the best atmospheres at DWS and a loss.

I think they called illegal forward pass on State on a TD pass and on replay he was a yard behind the line.

    Several from the 2000 season

2000 LSU (Saban’s first year in Red Stick)
    - 80 yard bomb for a TD to Terrell Grindle on 2nd play from scrimmage
    - Madkin helicoptering in the air Garrett Shrader style to finish a TD scramble
    - Dicenzo dragging future Pro Bowl safety Ryan Clark about 5 yards into the end zone
    - The highlight that wasn’t….defense forcing a fumble into the end zone that we recovered, was still ruled a TD

    2000 Arkansas
    - Dicenzo running about 40-50 yards in the waning seconds of a tie game to set us ip for a chip shot field goal to win…..followed by Jackie making the mind numbingly stupid decision to have him hold for the FG attempt in a sleet storm when he was gassed right afterwards

If I remember it was Double OT. Took my Woo Pig girlfriend now wife to that game, and she got cussed a few times for rooting for the wrong team. We just laughed it off as the drunkeness that it was.

2013 - Nickoe Whitley picked off Johnny Manziel twice in the end zone. We lost by 10, but if we'd barely won I think we'd still be celebrating that performance.

2020 - Will Rogers throws for 440 yards and 3 touchdowns against Ole Miss.

Mullen was a first year coach and he kinda screwed that up, didn’t know it was a reviewable play so he didn’t ask for replay which would’ve clearly overturned it.

I don’t think it was raining. I do remember Ballard diving for the endzone and fumbling out of bounds for a touchback. I think that ended up costing the game and it’s a shame too because he was running all over them.

The 2010 Arkansas game was the one where Nick Bell’s mom rang the cowbell during halftime. As good as that game was, that was the best highlight.
And I’d add Fitzgerald plowing into the end zone against Bama in Dan’s last year. Only to lose on a deep TD to some little known freshman WR named Devonta Smith.

I watched this game again recently. It could have gone way differently…

We fumble at the goal line, which turned a potential tie game into a 14 point deficit in the first quarter.

We had two separate QB/center exchange fumbles on 3rd downs around midfield.

If we had at least one of Wheat/Davis in the Egg Bowl or the UGA game, Daniels and Corral may not have all day to throw. We were killed repeatedly by the deep ball in both games.

Awesome game I attended. New stadium expansion. Saban first year. Loudest crowd I've ever heard next to the Superdome reopening game post-Katrina. We drove down the field in the closing moments of regulation into the teeth of the student body (North endzone) to score the tying TD. Pork Chop was injured on the drive but waved his replacement off the field down on the goal line. Our fullback broke his hand on the drive but still caught the tying score. Sherrill screwed up by not going for 2. Our defense was dead tired and I'm convinced the lsu staff had JLD's signals. We got the ball back at the end of regulation but Pork Chop's replacement gave up a sack to Madkin and the rest is history. Great ballgame. The next day I had to go into the office for some work, left to a sandwich shop to grab lunch, and the guys in the back were talking about the game. I wanted to go New York-pizza-brawl on them.

Men’s basketball 2018 at Missouri where we ended the last 1:30ish of regulation on like a 13-0 run to force overtime only to lose on a questionable push off call on Lamar Peters right before he hit what would’ve been the game winning three

Robert Bean Pick Six of Tee Martin...

in the SEC Championship Game. You literally had to be there to see it - the Big 12 Championship Game (Texas A&M and Kansas State) ran into Double OT. ABC did not cover the SECCG until close to halftime. It came early in the 1st half, and it was an amazing play in its own right, with the significance of the game notwithstanding. He intercepted the ball on a fade route along the sideline somewhere around midfield, reversed the field, and took it down the far sideline for a TD. He probably got credit for a 50 or 60 yard return but ran over 100 yards.

It wasn’t questionable. It was 100% the wrong call. The ref got faked into blowing that whistle.

Good ones. That Swat alleyoop was crazy. Perfect pass, unbelievable one-handed get by the big man.

I saw it live but I'm not sure I've seen a video of it since. It's clear in my mind, but I wonder if it still looks as amazing with all the crazy-athletic dunks people have these days.

Well, never mind, I found it. (Amazing what this new google machine can do.) And yep, it's still an unbelievable play. You'll want to start at about 2:29 with the 3 by Randy Stewart and then a Phil Turner block.

To me, this was always one of DM's biggest probs. In today's world, you HAVE to have a coach that is solely in charge of replay/replay requests. This one never even got reviewed because we didn't ask for it. And we were on offense so we could have stalled to make sure... But it never got officially reviewed.

^ This play x1000. This is the play I think of every time a great play is squandered in a loss.
I was in the student section and saw this in person. Video doesn't do it justice.
