Pack Mentality: Greatest AMERICAN Rock Band.

But are we talking favorites or greatest? I think I'm seeing a lot of lists made up of favorite bands. I love CCR, but I wouldn't think of them as one of the greatest.

He was the most well known. But actually off of his first CD they went by the Jimi Hendrix experience and featured all the band members on the cover. I guess they just later went by Jimi Hendrix not sure why.

Of course, we are talking about one of the most subjective topics in the world, but my American favorites are:

The Dead, The Band, CSNY, GNR, Allman Brothers, The Doors

While they did have the top album of the 80's, their work after that wasn't much to listen to

    I'm also a Doors fan

one great album shouldnt qualify you as the greatest band

its your judgment in my opinion. You are asserting that a modern-popish band is the greatest American rock band of all time. Considering they've been around for no more than 10 years.

I just think your judgment and/or experience is severely lacking.

Soundgarden is probably my favorite, but they didn't have the appeal to the masses like some others.

Sorry, I couldn't think of an African, Asian, or South American rock band.

Allman Brothers or Dobbie Brothers or any band that Ted Nugent played in.

I agree with you, CCR shouldnt be in the discussion.

Out of my list, The Band really shouldnt be either, but I love their music.

    GNR
    Van Halen
    The Doors

were one of the best, without a doubt.

Others in their league, Little Feat and The Band. Same time of sound, though not necessarily southern.

And Ben Affleck is a cheese dick. There is no way they should be mentioned and The Band not make the list.

Ha, obviously there is no way everyone will agree.

knows much about them. I think GREATEST rock band needs to be pretty much universally known. I am constantly shocked by people who dont even know who The Band or Little Feat are. Sure, they know about Dixie Chicken thanks to Garth Brooks - which is sad - but that is about it.

KISS might top my list of most overrated garbage of all time.... I can't describe how much KISS sucks.

There's a lot of Canada in The Band...I'm not sure they qualify. I'm not quite sure Levon's awesomeness can get them honorary American status.

    Great band, though.

Edit: Just realized Azzurri was the original poster.

In my mind, they are the 2 greatest...but that's just my opinion.

I think that as far as American rock bands are concerned Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is the unquestioned number 1. You could also put names like Bob Dylan or Neil Young up here, but if we're just talking bands, then I guess not.

Followed in no particular order by: AC/DC (Kick ass rock and roll), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Talking Heads (underrated), The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds is one of the best records of all time), The Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd (see AC/DC, except more southern), Big Star (HUGELY underrated), Fugazi (true punk, not this Green Day bullshit), Nirvana, Pavement (revolutionizedindependent music), Pearl Jam, R.E.M., and The Velvet Underground. I'm sure I'm leaving some of, but those are off the top of my head.

Great newer bands are: Wilco, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Kings of Leon were good until this new shitty album, Spoon, The National, My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse, The Hold Steady was up here until Franz left, Drive-By Truckers, and The Black Keys.

Bands I think are overrated and shitty, but everyone else seems to like: Aerosmith, Van Halen (only admirable quality is the comedy that comes with listening to them), basically any hair metal band, Bon Jovi, The Eagles, Elvis (did he ever even write any of his own songs), ZZ Top, and last but certainly not least Guns n Roses. Guns n Roses might be one of the worst bands of all time. Appetite for Destruction was horrible, Use Your Illusion was hideous, Use Your Illusion II was god awful, Chinese Democracy was brilliant (sarcasm); not to mention that Axel Rose is one of the stupidest persons to ever walk on this planet. I mean come on guys... really? Guns n Roses?

I know I've left some off, but this is all I can think of right now.

I did not mean they were the greatest of all time. I meant that currently as in right now, they are pretty much the only active rock band I will listen to. And they are not pop by any means. The two songs of theirs that were played on the radio are far from the rest of the music they make. They just recently became popular in America because of those two songs. They have been huge in Europe and specifically the UK for close to 10 years.

They were a great garage rock band, well that was until I heard Use Somebody and Sex on Fire.
